When World War II began Leonid took part in it as a volunteer in the Red Army. He became a major in the Political department of the 94th Guards Rifle Division. With this division he took part of the battle of Stalingrad. He then belonged to the 96th Rifle Brigade as a political instructor and editor of the newspaper “Stalinskaja Gvardija” (Stalin Guards). He fought together with the 94th Guards Rifle Division until they reached the river Dnipro in September 1943. He then worked in the staff of the army. He continued to work as a front journalist for “Sovjetskij Bojets” (Soviet Soldier) and in 1945 he was sent to Berlin to report about the last battle for the newspaper “Za chest Rodiny” (For the Honor of the Native land). After the war he worked as an aide to the first secretary of the Communist Party of Ukraine, Oleksij Illarionovich Kyrychenko between 1953-1957. In December 1957 Kyrychenko became secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party in Moscow. Leonid then followed him as an aide and moved to Moscow. Kyrychenko lost his seat in the Central Committee in May 1960, but Leonid continued to work at the Central Committee. He was married to Alla Nikolajevna Moisejeva. She came from the Odesa district in Ukraine. Children: Liana, b. 1941, May 31. She lives in Moscow. Oksana, b. 1946, July 25. She lives in Moscow. She has a son that goes by his mother's family name: Maksim Andrejevich Rechmedin, b. 1973, April 12. He lives in Moscow. |
